Program Objectives

The Asian Barometer survey program has 3 main objectives:

1.To generate a region-wide base of scientifically reliable and comparable data

The data include public opinion about political values, democracy, governance, human security, and economic reforms. The data were gathered through face-to-face interviews with randomly selected samples of respondents representing the adult population in each country. By insisting on strict research standards, we seek to assure the users of our data that it is trustworthy and accurate.

2.To strengthen intellectual and institutional capacity for research on democracy based on surveying ordinary citizens in all participating countries

The objective is achieved principally through the mutual exchange of expertise, occasionally supplemented with technical training workshops. The network fosters exchange of expertise by bringing partners together for planning and analysis at the national, continental, and global levels.

3.To disseminate survey results to academics and policy audiences

We use the model of Globalbarometer Survey (GBS) report to facilitate consistent presentation of survey results. The model takes various forms and is directed to a wide assortment of users, including decision makers in legislative and executive branches of government, policy advocates and civic educators, journalists in the mass media, academic researchers, international investors, and donor agencies concerned with democratic development.
