The International Political Science Association (IPSA) has agreed to a GBS proposal to establish a Research Committee on Election, Citizens and Parties under the auspices of the IPSA. In the future, regular conferences and round table discussions will be held. Prof. Yun-han Chu will represent Asia as a committee member.

The Asian Barometer Survey expresses its condolences for victims of recent disasters in Japan. ABS wishes to express its condolences for the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. One of our beloved colleagues, Tianjian Shi, passed away at 1:09 PM on December 25. He suffered from interstitial lung disease and it was caused by his dis-directed immune system, something beyond the grasp of modern medicine. In so many ways, he has made great contribution to Asian Barometer. It is a huge loss for all of us.

Progress report from the third wave of the Asian Barometer Survey:
1. Taiwan, the Philippines, and Mongolia have already completed interviews.
2. Singapore will complete interviews in August.
3. Thailand has completed training for interviewers. Survey work will commence shortly.
4. Survey work in Vietnam will commence shortly and is expected to be completed in December.

Asia Barometer Survey was mentioned in a Time Magazine Article on "Asia's Dithering Democracies". The article cited ABS survey results which show that many citizens believe recent democratic transitions have brought no improvement to their lives, and that nostalgia for overthrown dictators and support for authoritarian "Asian Values" is growing. Time also used evidence from ABS to illustrate that while the majority of Asians say they support most democratic values, their support for limits on a leader's power is much lower than in Europe and even sub-Saharan Africa.

On March 2 Asia Barometer scholar Zhengxu Wang attended a panel discussion at the British Parliament and gave a presentation on the prospects for democracy in China. Prof. Wang used data from the Asian Barometer Survey as the basis of his presentation.

Prof. Yun-han Chu , Coordinator of Asian Barometer Survey, was recently elected to the Council of American Political Science Association. He is the first-ever Asia-based member of the Council of the APSA.

Prof Chong-min Park from the the Asian Barometer team in Korea was invited by the IHS to Taiwan as a visiting scholar. He plans to spend two months in Taiwan carrying out research.

Damba GANBAT Ph. D. was awarded the 2009 Mongolia area " Taiwan research visiting scholar program", and visited Taiwan from October 27-29 to carry out work and exchange of ideas on statistical methodology.

The Asian Barometer is to hold an international conference on "The State of Democratic Governance in Asia" in Taipei on June 20-21, 2008. This outreach is to provide a platform between the scholars of ABS and experts from democracy supporting agencies to exchange the sources and policies in supporting democratic development in the region.
